Auburn State Recreation Area

Spend the day at the Auburn State Recreation Area in the heart of the Gold Country. This recreational area covers 40 miles of the North and Middle Forks of the American River. It was once filled with eager miners and is now home to a beautiful natural area perfect for a variety of outdoor activities for everyone. Whether you enjoy hiking, swimming, boating, fishing, camping, mountain biking, horseback riding or even gold panning, the recreation center offers it all. The Auburn State Recreation Area is made up of land once set aside for the Auburn Dam, which features the Foresthill Bridge, which is also a sight to see!



Leaving the Lake you'll pass through Georgetown, where you see a lot of offroad trucks getting ready to head up the hill. Cutting over to the small town of Cool, our spirited part of the drive came to an end, as we hit a lot of traffic. With a nice cruise into Auburn our drive came to an end. Due to the surprisingly light traffic, we found ourselves an hour ahead of schedule. Some of us decided to head home early, while most of us headed to Max’s Restaurant for brunch and good conversation. Overall, it was a great drive and we ended early enough to avoid the afternoon heat.

Old Town Auburn

For a taste of the area in general, Old Town Auburn is the only place you need. Like a little city on a hill, you will probably first notice the sweeping views around you. It is a location for special events and a whole lot of history. Depending on the day you visit, you may encounter the colors and scents of a farmer’s market or take in the sights and sounds of an antique street fair. It’s all really enchanting no matter what you choose to do in Old Town Auburn. Nature Center

For all the nature lovers, the Placer Nature Center might be up your alley. The community-based volunteer center is devoted to environmental education for children and families. After a long and prosperous rain season, now may be the time learn about the water life cycle at the museum’s Watershed Learning Center. Other exhibits include the Changing Lands Exhibit, Discovery Room, Native American Village, Garrison’s Park and Nature Trails. Bernhard Museum

Take a trip back in time at the Bernhard Museum. Built 1851, this landmark has been taking in visitors for more than 150 years! Near the heart of Auburn, the museum is packed with artifacts and furnishings of an erstwhile era of simpler days. So, turn off your iPhone and enjoy the Bernhard Museum. If you want a little bit more history, you can also drop by the Forest Hill Divide Museum, Gold Rush Museum, Golden Drift Museum, Griffith Quarry Museum and the Placer County Museum. Placer County Museum

If you only have time for one museum, the Placer County Museum is as good as they come. It showcases an overview of the county’s history from the early Nisenan inhabitants through the second half of the 20th century. The museum, which also features a collection of Native American artifacts, occupies the first floor of the famous courthouse.
